Behind the Numbers: What’s Driving Copper Prices

Copper futures surged to their highest level in over two years on Monday, marking a nearly 28% increase over the past three months. However, analysts caution that the industrial metal may have entered overbought territory, signaling potential risk. John Caruso, a senior market strategist at RJO Futures, acknowledges this concern, noting a record level of net speculative long positions according to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s report. He advises a cautious approach.

Copper's surging demand from novel sources is reshaping its long-term usage, with prices outperforming gold and silver this year due to bets on its importance in AI and electric vehicles.

Can Raspberry Pearls Save Starbucks?

Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz took to LinkedIn last week to give potential guidance on how the company might improve, after the recent dismal earnings report.

Marking its first decline since 2020, Starbucks had a 2% decline in quarterly net revenue to $8.6 billion, accompanied by a 4% drop in same-store sales. This comes as the company rolls out their latest “Refreshers” summer drinks, which includes raspberry flavored pearls, like those found in bubble tea.

“Over the past five days, I have been asked by people inside and outside the company for my thoughts on what should be done” Schultz shared in his Sunday LinkedIn post. He went on to layout the role of senior leaders in revamping the company, as well as how to leverage tech to improve the customer experience.

“Senior leaders—including board members—need to spend more time with those who wear the green apron. One of their first actions should be to reinvent the mobile ordering and payment platform—which Starbucks pioneered—to once again make it the uplifting experience it was designed to be.”

He concluded by lauding a focus on culture creation. “There are no quick fixes. But the path forward should be what has guided the company over decades of financial success: Inspire your people, exceed the expectations of your customers, and let culture and servant leadership lead the way.”

While CEO Laxman Narasimhan’s “reinvention” plan focuses on employee retention, and even wage increases, Starbucks grapples with unionization efforts alongside what the CEO describes as "the impact of a more cautious consumer."

A New Era in Philanthropy: Melinda Gates Exits the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Melinda Gates announced yesterday that she will be stepping down from The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in June. In a statement she shared with LinkedIn, she stated confidence in the executive team and board. She also had these comments:

“This is a critical moment for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world—and those fighting to protect and advance equality are in urgent need of support. Under the terms of my agreement with Bill, in leaving the foundation, I will have an additional $12.5 billion to commit to my work on behalf of women and families.”
