Water Main Breaks in Atlanta: Hospital Evacuations and Boil Water Advisory Amid Crisis

Major water main breaks in Atlanta, Georgia, caused by corroded pipes, led to significant water outages and disruptions, prompting Mayor Andre Dickens to declare a state of emergency. These breaks forced Emory University Hospital Midtown to evacuate some patients and reschedule many appointments due to the lack of water. A boil water advisory was issued for the area as a precaution, and several businesses and events, including concerts and aquarium visits, were canceled. The incident highlighted the connection between community health and infrastructure issues, with residents expressing frustration over the city's slow communication regarding the crisis.

Behind the Numbers

Cooling Labor Market Meets Low Layoffs

Job openings in the US decreased for the second consecutive month, reaching a three-year low in April with 8.06 million available positions, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is below economists' expectations of 8.36 million and marks the lowest level since February 2021. Although job growth has slowed, layoffs remain minimal, indicating positive net job growth. The Federal Reserve views the cooling labor market as a sign to maintain current interest rates, despite inflation still being a concern.

This partnership, led by the African Financial Alliance on Climate Change (AFAC) and the IFRS Foundation's ISSB, focuses on capacity building and assistance to improve transparency and mobilize capital flows across Africa.
